Tokyo University develops electric car technology with controllable front and rear wheels

A research team led by Associate Professor Fujimoto Bozhi from the Graduate School of Innovation at the University of Tokyo, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors, has made a breakthrough in electric vehicle technology. This new system enables vehicles to maintain stability and control on slippery surfaces, including wet roads, cement surfaces, and partially frozen roads. By independently managing the drive of the front and rear wheels, the technology ensures consistent total driving force while keeping the vehicle body steady. The key feature of this innovation is its ability to predict and prevent wheel slippage before it occurs. It synchronizes the critical slip point of both the front and rear wheels within seconds, allowing for "predictive control." Once slippage is anticipated, the system automatically adjusts current and torque distribution. This is achieved through the use of on-board motors and differential gears, which enable independent control of each wheel's power. As a result, the overall driving force remains balanced and consistent throughout the journey. Testing has shown promising results: the impact of the electric vehicle on the driver’s body—measured in terms of lateral forces—has been reduced from an average of 5% to just 2.5%. Additionally, the vehicle experiences significantly less swaying during acceleration changes, making for a smoother and more comfortable ride. Currently, the technology is primarily focused on improving vehicle start-up performance and reducing idle during acceleration. However, challenges such as torque reduction during high-speed maneuvers have yet to be fully addressed. In the future, researchers plan to further refine acceleration and turning control systems to enhance overall stability and comfort, bringing us one step closer to safer and more reliable electric vehicles in all weather conditions.
