Selected mahogany furniture to grasp the four essentials

In recent years, mahogany furniture has gained increasing attention for its appreciation value and collectibility, attracting both consumers and collectors. However, due to its high price, some unscrupulous manufacturers have started producing fake products in various ways, leading to confusion among buyers. To address these concerns, the reporter interviewed rosewood expert Liu Shuji, who shared common techniques used to counterfeit mahogany furniture. Liu Shuji explained that one of the most common methods is dyeing, where chemical agents are used to color wood to resemble the appearance of real mahogany. Another technique involves using cheaper wood that closely resembles mahogany in texture and color. Some counterfeiters even import low-quality semi-finished parts from Vietnam, carve them, and pass them off as authentic. This method is superficial, as the internal structure remains unchanged. Sofas are particularly targeted, with only certain parts made from quality wood while others are made from inferior materials. Another popular method is veneering, where a thin layer of genuine rosewood or red sandalwood is applied to the surface of cheaper wood. This creates an illusion of authenticity but hides the low-quality base underneath. The fifth method involves disassembling real rosewood furniture and reassembling it with mixed materials, or chemically treating small scraps to patch together complete pieces. To help consumers identify fake mahogany furniture, Liu Shuji provided four key tips. First, it’s essential to understand the different types of redwood and their characteristics, such as scientific names, origins, and features. This knowledge helps avoid being misled by marketing terms. Second, pay attention to the grain and weight of the wood. Real mahogany has distinct patterns like tiger stripes, landscapes, or water waves, while fakes tend to be overly colored and lack texture. Third, use a blade to test hidden areas like the bottom or legs. Genuine mahogany will show a reddish-brown color when scraped, which turns into a purple-brown over time due to oxidation. If the seller refuses to allow this test, it may be a red flag. Finally, always ensure the sales contract clearly states the exact name of the wood according to the official mahogany standard to protect your rights in case of disputes. By following these guidelines, consumers can make more informed decisions and reduce the risk of purchasing counterfeit items.
