Solar-purified air street lamps that "breath" like plants
Do you think this is just a regular street light? Think again. This innovative outdoor unit is actually a smart air purifier designed to improve urban air quality.
In recent days, smog has returned to Beijing, raising public concerns about air pollution. A groundbreaking street lamp designed by Professor Qiu Song from the China Academy of Fine Arts aims to tackle this issue by acting like a plant—filtering the air while providing illumination.
Environmental and lighting experts have praised the concept, noting that while the idea is promising, challenges such as energy stability and cost control must be addressed before it can be widely implemented.
Design Concept: Clean Energy, Air Purification, and Lighting
This morning, I had the chance to see the prototype of this new street lamp at the Industrial Design Department of the China Institute of Fine Arts. At first glance, it looks similar to a traditional street light, but its design is anything but ordinary.
The lamp integrates solar panels and wind turbines to generate electricity, providing sustainable lighting for pedestrians at night. Without the need for an external power source, it can be installed anywhere, free from the limitations of cables.
Its most impressive feature is the built-in air purification system, which functions like photosynthesis, cleaning the surrounding air and reducing pollutants.
From Indoor Purifiers to Outdoor Innovations
Professor Qiu's inspiration came from everyday life. He once designed an indoor air purifier and was concerned about the worsening air quality in Beijing. That’s when he decided to bring the concept outdoors.
He noticed that traditional street lamps are often underused, serving only as lights. “Why not add an air purification system?†he thought. “It could help reduce vehicle emissions and make a real difference.â€
This innovative design, called “Spiritual Streetlight,†won an award at the Third International Art and Science Exhibition in November 2012. Experts from the Ministry of Science and Technology and several companies have shown strong interest in the project.
Expert Opinions: A Promising Idea with Challenges Ahead
Although the street lamps are still in the conceptual stage, Professor Qiu believes the technology is ready and feasible. “We already have clean energy solutions and purification systems that can be integrated,†he said.
Professor Zhang Pengyi from Tsinghua University’s School of Environment supports the idea. “Indoor air pollution is mainly due to formaldehyde, while outdoor pollution comes from particulates and nitrogen oxides from vehicles,†he explained. “The purification device needs to be targeted, and placing these lamps in high-traffic areas or semi-open spaces like tunnels would be most effective.â€
Liu Shiping, vice chairman of the China Illuminating Engineering Society, also sees potential in the design. However, he emphasized that technical issues like energy stability and cost efficiency must be resolved before large-scale implementation. “Once the technology is refined and costs are controlled, it could become a valuable addition to urban infrastructure.â€
Key Features of the Smart Street Light:
- Membrane Structure Photovoltaic Panels: Two stretched surfaces allow for a wider light acceptance angle and better visual appeal.
- Vertical Wind Wheel: Can capture wind from any direction, ensuring consistent power generation.
- LED Tube: Provides efficient lighting with less than half the power consumption of traditional lamps and a lifespan five times longer.
- Purification Device: Composed of two layers of chemical agents, with an ozone lamp in the middle for enhanced air cleaning.
- Air Inlet and Outlet Holes: Positioned on the pole, the system draws in polluted air through the bottom and releases purified air from the top.
This innovative fusion of art, science, and sustainability represents a bold step forward in urban design. As cities continue to grow, integrating smart technologies into everyday infrastructure may be the key to a cleaner, healthier future.
