Powdery mildew is one of the most common and challenging diseases affecting kiwifruit cultivation. It can cause significant damage to crops, making it a major concern for farmers. Effective control through timely application of **pesticides** is essential to minimize yield loss and maintain fruit quality.
The symptoms of powdery mildew typically start with small, needle-like spots on the upper surface of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand into irregular yellow-green lesions. The affected areas may merge together, forming larger patches. On the underside of the leaves, a white, powdery layer becomes visible, which is characteristic of the fungal infection. Later in the disease cycle, small, yellow-brown to dark-brown spores appear on the lesions. Infected leaves often curl, dry out, and eventually fall off, further reducing plant health and productivity.
To protect kiwifruit from powdery mildew, it's important to implement effective prevention strategies. Here are three key measures that can help:
First, improve crop management by increasing the use of phosphorus, potassium, and organic fertilizers while limiting nitrogen. This helps strengthen the plant’s natural resistance to disease. Second, manage vine growth properly by pruning and training branches to ensure good air circulation and sunlight penetration. Combining this with regular removal and disposal of infected leaves can also reduce the spread of the fungus. Third, apply appropriate fungicides at the early stages of infection. Recommended treatments include a 25% wettable powder of myclobutanil diluted at 2000 times, or 15% wettable powder of myclobutanil at 1000 times. Alternatively, a 45% sulfur suspension diluted at 500 times, or a 40% copper-based fungicide at 800 times, and a 50% wettable powder of triadimefon at 800 times. Spraying should be done every 7 to 10 days, with two consecutive applications recommended for best results.
By combining cultural practices with targeted chemical treatments, farmers can effectively manage powdery mildew and protect their kiwifruit crops.
