According to a report by South Korea's *East Asia Daily* on April 6, an international hacking group known as "Anonymous" launched a cyberattack on North Korea’s external propaganda website, "Between Our Peoples," on April 4. The group managed to expose the personal details of 9,001 members of the site. By April 6, approximately 500 of these members had their private information publicly released online.
"Between Our Peoples" is the official website of the Peaceful Reunification Committee of the Korean Motherland. While the site is banned for South Korean citizens, some netizens still access it through unofficial or encrypted channels.
Anonymous, which was founded in the United States in 2003, has previously targeted high-profile organizations such as the CIA, NATO, and Apple Inc., aiming to either steal sensitive data or disrupt their networks. The group is known for its activism, often targeting governments and institutions they view as oppressive or corrupt.
In a recent statement, the group announced that it would demand North Korea halt its nuclear weapons development and stop threatening the region. If these demands are not met, they warned of launching a full-scale cyber war against the regime.
South Korean media reported that the National Intelligence Service has started investigating the list of individuals whose personal data was leaked by the hackers. Authorities will first verify whether any of the listed individuals are South Koreans who have joined North Korean organizations. They will then assess whether these individuals may be violating South Korea’s National Security Law.
This incident has sparked concerns over cybersecurity and the potential risks of online activism, especially when it involves sensitive political content. As both North and South Korea continue to face tensions, the role of hacking groups like Anonymous in shaping the digital landscape remains a growing topic of discussion.
