2012 China Nonferrous Metals increased by 7.5 percentage points year on year
Abstract According to the latest data, in 2012, China produced 36.96 million tons of ten non-ferrous metals, representing a 7.5% year-on-year increase. However, this growth rate was 2.3 percentage points lower compared to 2011. Jia Xing, vice president of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, noted that the economic performance of enterprises during that year faced challenges. Starting from September, metal prices gradually stabilized and even saw a recovery, leading to improved profits, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Despite this improvement, the overall profitability of non-ferrous metal enterprises remained under pressure. The profit of large-scale non-ferrous metal enterprises reached 166.6 billion yuan, marking a 16.3% decline compared to the previous year. Additionally, the profit margin on main business revenue dropped to 4%, a decrease of 1.4 percentage points from the prior year.
Jia Xing pointed out that structural adjustments within the industry were beginning to show positive results. While mining and smelting companies experienced significant profit declines, material processing enterprises managed to report a profit of 75.4 billion yuan, showing a slight upward trend. In terms of fixed asset investment, mining projects grew by 13.4%, while material processing projects surged by 44.6%. Meanwhile, smelting projects saw a 5% reduction, indicating that many companies are shifting their focus toward more efficient and sustainable operations.
This shift suggests that industrial restructuring is gaining momentum, with a growing emphasis on optimizing the investment structure across the sector.
