Using WiFi to Charge Mobile Phones to Create "Super Materials" for Students

Allen Hawkes and Alexander Katko, two engineering students from the Platt School of Engineering at Duke University in the United States, have created a groundbreaking device called the "Charger Terminator." This innovative technology uses a special material known as "metamaterial" to harness WiFi signals and charge mobile phones, potentially replacing traditional wireless or portable chargers. The key component of their invention is a unique array made up of five energy conductors—fiberglass and copper—arranged on a circuit board. This structure, referred to as a "metamaterial," is designed to capture and convert wave energy into usable electricity. By combining materials like glass fiber, copper, and gold in specific shapes and patterns, the researchers enhanced the material's performance, turning it into a "supermaterial." The device is specifically engineered to capture microwave energy from WiFi signals. According to the team, this metamaterial can convert that energy into a 7.3-volt current with an efficiency of 36.8%. For comparison, standard USB chargers typically provide around 5 volts of power for small devices like smartphones. This development could revolutionize how we charge our devices. With the "Charger Terminator," users would no longer need a physical charger or power outlet—they could simply connect to a WiFi network and charge their phone wirelessly. The technology is still in its early stages, but it opens up exciting possibilities for future energy solutions. The research highlights the potential of metamaterials in capturing and utilizing ambient energy sources, paving the way for more sustainable and convenient charging methods. As the team continues to refine their design, the future of mobile power may look very different from what we know today.
