Scientists have developed a phase change fabric that can raise and lower the temperature

According to foreign media reports, scientists have recently developed a new textile, which can not only keep the wearers warm in the cold environment, but also cool them when the weather gets hot. This experimental material was developed by a team led by Professor Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Its production method is: first, the silk and chitosan are freeze-spun to form a fiber with a porous microstructure-by the way, chitosan is a high practicality found in the shell of crustaceans Natural compounds.

Next, the pores in the fiber are filled with polyethylene glycol (PEG), which is a phase change material that is solid when hot and liquid when cold. Finally, an organic polymer called polydimethylsiloxane is coated on the fiber to prevent PEG from leaking out in the liquid state.

It is said that the resulting thread has strength, elasticity and water resistance. The test method is to interweave them together to form a piece of material, and then sew it on a traditional polyester glove worn by a volunteer.

When the person puts the gloved hand in a space heated to 122 ºF (50 ºC), PEG will melt into a liquid-while absorbing the ambient heat, it also absorbs the surrounding heat-thus making the sticker The skin under the film cools. However, once the volunteers moved their hands to a space cooled to 50 ºF (10 ºC), PEG would solidify and release stored heat, warming the skin.

Scientists say that this manufacturing process can be mass-produced, and it should be relatively easy to integrate this material into the existing textile industry.

A paper about the study was recently published in the Journal of Applied Materials and Interfaces of the American Chemical Society.

Duplex Stainless Steel Overview

Duplex Stainless Steels, also referred to as austenitic-ferritic stainless steels, are a family of grades with about equal proportions of ferrite and austenite. These steels have a duplex microstructure which contributes to their high strength and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Due to their high content of chromium, nitrogen and molybdenum, duplex steels offer good resistance to local and uniform corrosion. Duplex stainless steels have good weldability.

Today, modern duplex stainless steels can be divided into three groups:
Lean Duplex such as LDX2101
Standard Duplex such as 2205, the work-horse grade accounting for more than 80% of duplex usage
Super Duplex such as Ferralium 255 and Zeron 100 and LDX2507

Of the duplex grades, duplex 2205 is the most widely used. However, the super duplex steels like Zeron® 100 and LDX2507 are excellent for servicing severe corrosive environments, such as offshore and marine applications. Lean duplex 2101 is available as an economic alternative to 300 series stainless steels.
