Greener: Researchers use fish scales to create sustainable electronic skins

According to foreign media reports, flexible electronic products worn on the skin show great potential, and its applications range from health monitoring to gesture control. Recently, scientists have developed a wearable device made of fish scales, which means that this type of device may soon become more environmentally friendly.

Usually, the so-called "electronic skin" device is composed of a flexible, stretchable, transparent plastic film base, and the electronic components are embedded in it. Their lifespan usually does not exceed one week, which means they will be thrown away after that.

Considering this situation, a group of scientists from Nanjing University of Science and Technology in China set out to develop a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Under the leadership of Hai-Dong Yu, Juqing Liu and Wei Huang, they started with the abandoned fish scales. The researchers extracted a gelatin from the collagen on these scales, then poured the substance into a Petri dish and allowed it to dry into a thin film. After testing, the film is flexible, durable and transparent, these conditions allow it to be used in electronic skin.

Although equipment made with this film may not last longer than traditional similar equipment, they do not need to use petroleum-based plastics, which will stay in the landfill for a long time after being discarded. Time will degrade. In fact, if this film is mixed into 60 ° C water for a few seconds, it can return to the reusable gelatin state; if it is buried in soil, it can be completely degraded within 24 days.

It is reported that the team used this film to construct an AC electroluminescence device that can continue to emit light after being bent and relaxed 1000 times.
