Gear Reduction Inspection Guidelines:

a. The gear teeth must be free from broken teeth, cracks, flaking, or any signs of deformation or interference damage that could compromise performance. Any visible defects on the tooth surface should be carefully assessed.
b. Minor pitting on the gear tooth surface may be acceptable if it is not progressing further. However, the gear should be replaced if any of the following conditions are met:
(1) The depth of the pitting reaches 100% of the tooth height.
(2) The pitting depth is 30% of the tooth height and the length covers 40% of the tooth length.
(3) The pitting depth is 70% of the tooth height and the length is 10% of the tooth length.
(4) The average diameter of the pitting spots exceeds 2 mm.

It’s important to conduct regular inspections to ensure the gears remain in optimal condition. If in doubt, it’s always better to replace rather than risk equipment failure. Always follow manufacturer guidelines for maintenance and replacement intervals. Regular lubrication and monitoring can also help extend the life of the gear system.
