18.7%! Empa Creates New Record of Flexible CIGS Cell Conversion Efficiency

Recently, Professor Ayodhya Tiwari of the Swiss Federal Institute for Materials Testing and Development (Empa) and the R&D team he led led to the creation of a flexible CIGS cell with a conversion efficiency of 18.7%, breaking the agency's previous record of 17.6 in June 2010. % efficiency record. This new record has been independently certified by the German Horne Solar Systems Institute.

"The 18.7% efficiency of flexible CIGS cells has approached polysilicon and CIGS cells grown on glass bottoms. The value of the new record of 18.7% is that it has almost reduced the flexibility of CIGS solar cells and polycrystalline silicon cells or glass substrate CIGS thin-film batteries. The gap between the chips," Tiwari said, "The flexibility and lightness of CIGS solar cells is comparable to that of the best products. It will have unlimited development potential, and bring a paradigm shift to the industry. Realize the low cost of solar energy in the near future."

Empa researchers and experts from Filsom studied the low-temperature growth of GIGS materials on flexible sinks and increased the efficiency from 14.1% in 2005 to the current 18.7%. Empa's researchers insist that this is the fastest growing flexible solar cell on polymer or metal foil.

Empa's scientists attributed the improvement in efficiency to the reduction of the composite loss of the CIGS layer and its low-temperature deposition technology with patented technology. In addition, they also used sodium in-situ doping in the final stage and claimed that this method can effectively improve the efficiency of the polymer film. "Our results clearly demonstrate the advantages of cryogenic CIGS deposition process. We can produce high-efficiency flexible solar cells on polymer or metal foil," Tiwari said.

Empa pointed out that "the company has achieved a maximum efficiency of 17.5% on steel foils covered with impurity diffusion barriers at temperatures exceeding 550°C." However, when the R&D team used the low-temperature CIGS deposition process developed jointly with Flisom on the non-diffusion barrier steel foil, the battery performance was very similar to that after the high temperature process, and the efficiency was as high as 17.7%. Therefore, scientists concluded that "this technology does not require the barrier coating that people usually make on metal foil to prevent harmful impurities."

Empa manager Gian-Luca Bona said: “This is based on our in-depth understanding of the characteristics of the cell substrate and interface materials, and systematically integrated innovation. Next, we need to convert this technological innovation into a large-scale low-cost solar components. Scale production.” Empa and Flisom will continue to cooperate to jointly increase manufacturing processes and increase production.
