Rolling bearings play a crucial role in supporting rotating shafts and components. They were among the first mechanical parts to be mass-produced and standardized, making them an essential element in modern machinery. Since the early 20th century, Western countries have developed comprehensive bearing industries, continuously improving their performance, lifespan, cost efficiency, and application range. Theoretical research and calculation methods have also evolved, leading to more accurate and reliable bearing designs. Today, the selection process for rolling bearings is well-established, with a wide variety of types available. These bearings are highly standardized, and high-precision options are easily accessible. Their performance, accuracy, service life, and reliability meet the demands of various industries, including advanced technologies. A typical rolling bearing consists of an inner ring, an outer ring, rolling elements (such as balls or rollers), and a cage that keeps the rolling elements evenly spaced between the raceways. The inner and outer rings, along with the rolling elements, are usually made from high-carbon chrome steel or carburized steel. These materials undergo heat treatment to achieve optimal hardness, ensuring they can withstand contact fatigue from repeated motion. The surfaces of the bearing are precision-ground using specialized equipment to ensure smooth operation. Although different types of rolling bearings have unique characteristics, most share common features: - Rolling bearings have low starting resistance, making them efficient even at low speeds. - Standardization ensures consistency in size and precision, making high-quality bearings readily available. - Compared to sliding bearings, rolling bearings are less prone to wear, helping maintain machine accuracy over time. - Maintenance and repair costs are generally lower than those of sliding bearings. - Many rolling bearings can handle both radial and axial loads, offering versatility in applications.
