Dill cultivation management method

How to Cultivate Dill: Dill is best grown from seeds. Sow them in early April, and make sure to provide shade after sowing. Keep the seedbed consistently moist, and you should see sprouts within about a week.

Dill is easy to grow:

1. Planting in the open field: Choose a sunny spot that’s sheltered from strong winds and has good drainage. Apply base fertilizer before planting, and add liquid fertilizer once or twice before flowering. Water thoroughly when planting, and then water only once a week. (Note: Avoid transplanting large seedlings, as they may struggle to adapt.)

2. Growing in pots: Place a small amount of base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot, and apply liquid fertilizer once a month. Water as needed, but avoid overwatering.

3. Pruning stems and leaves: This helps improve air circulation and light exposure, while also keeping the plant looking neat. After the flowers have faded, remove the spent blooms promptly to prevent them from going to seed. This helps concentrate nutrients for better flowering and extends the blooming period.

Optimal Growth Conditions for Dill:

Dill is originally from tropical regions, so it thrives in warm conditions and is sensitive to cold and frost. When temperatures are low, growth slows down significantly. Seeds germinate best between 20°C and 25°C. Most dill varieties prefer partial shade, though some like Quamoclit lobata require less than 12 hours of sunlight to bloom. The soil doesn’t need to be rich, but it grows best in well-drained, loose, and fertile ground.

The dill seed contains approximately 139,000 seeds per gram, and the seeds can remain viable for up to 3 to 4 years. The fruit ripening period varies, and they tend to drop easily once mature. Each fruit usually contains 3 to 4 seeds. If both red and white flowers are present, it's best to plant them separately to maintain variety purity.
