Industry information security such as power is highly concerned
At the 24th China International Surveying Control and Instrumentation Exhibition in 2013, on August 29th, industry expert Yang Xiaoqiang shared his insights on the development of China's automation industry over the past four decades. He highlighted that from the 1980s onward, automation technology had evolved significantly, starting with relays, moving to PLCs, PCS, motion control, and eventually bus technologies. These advancements played a key role in shaping the industry.
However, Yang pointed out that by the 1990s, the increasing complexity of automation standards led to a fragmentation of communication protocols among different brands. This lack of interoperability created what he called a "technical disaster," making it difficult for systems to communicate effectively across platforms.
After 2010, the automation industry saw a new wave of transformation. Manufacturers began offering integrated, platform-based, and open control solutions, allowing equipment to operate within a unified application environment. This shift enabled more standardized communication methods. But it also introduced new challenges—particularly in ensuring the security of industrial information and communications under an open control platform.
Yang noted that all industrial control systems before 2000 were essentially "naked," meaning they lacked proper security measures. In recent years, the Chinese government has become increasingly aware of the risks associated with industrial information security, especially in critical sectors like power and petrochemicals, which are vital to the country’s economic stability.
To address these concerns, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology established the "Industrial Information Security Unit" to oversee and regulate the security of industrial systems. Major companies such as Guodian Power and Sinopec are now expected to invest heavily in secure communication systems and infrastructure.
Several listed companies are already positioning themselves in this growing market. Firms like VenusStar, Weishitong, Blue Dun, and Beixinyuan are actively involved in providing information security solutions tailored for industrial environments.
