Guazhou County, located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province, is a vital transportation hub and an ancient stop on the Silk Road. It connects Yumen City to the east with Dunhuang, a famous tourist destination, while bordering the Subei Mongolian Autonomous County to the north and south, and linking up with Hami City in Xinjiang to the northwest. Known as the "Wind Power Capital of the World," Guazhou boasts abundant wind energy resources, making it one of China's key regions for wind power development.
As the interview group traveled by bus through the county seat, the strong winds were immediately noticeable. The willows along the road swayed violently, and newly planted trees were often uprooted. Locals joked that "the wind only stops once a year, and it blows from spring to winter." This fierce climate has made Guazhou prone to natural disasters, shaping both the environment and the resilience of its people.
The journey continued through the Gobi Desert, where the wind howled fiercely, kicking up dust and small stones. The sky turned gray, and visibility dropped dramatically. Many reporters from mainland China and Taiwan were stunned by the intensity of the storm, witnessing firsthand the power of nature in this remote region.
Upon arriving at the Jiuquan Wind Power Base, the team was welcomed by local officials who presented them with fresh honeydew melons — a local specialty known for its sweetness, thanks to the long hours of sunlight and rich soil. As they enjoyed the fruit, company representatives provided an overview of the wind power operations, highlighting the significance of renewable energy in the region.
In the control room of the Jiuquan Wind Power Company, employees monitored the wind turbines with precision. Zhang Liang, the assistant manager of the production department, explained the company’s operations and answered questions from the reporters. The team showed great interest in wind power technology, asking about costs, capacity, and the number of turbines in operation.
Guazhou has historically had surplus electricity, much of which is exported to neighboring regions. Since wind energy is free and low-cost, the return on investment is quick, fueling local economic growth. The company is now looking to expand further, leveraging its natural advantages.
As the delegation prepared to visit the wind farm, they were once again surrounded by reporters eager for more details. Questions ranged from turbine costs to technical specifications. Journalists took photos, recorded videos, and scribbled notes, showing their deep engagement with the topic.
Outside the company, the vast expanse of the Gobi was dotted with countless white wind turbines, spinning gracefully in the wind. As the team walked among them, they were excited to capture the moment, taking pictures and interacting with the towering structures. Taiwanese reporters seized the opportunity for a final video interview with Zhang Liang, who responded patiently and openly.
Zhang Liang shared insights with Yang Yi, the Director-General of the Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasizing the growing role of wind energy in Guazhou. He noted that Taiwan is also investing in wind power to address its own energy challenges. Both sides, he suggested, could benefit from technological collaboration, creating a brighter future for the people across the strait.
