Wood furniture maintenance tips
Wood is a natural material that, even after being transformed into furniture, still retains the characteristics of living plants. Wooden furniture has unique breathability and moisture absorption properties, making it sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Many owners of log furniture tend to clean the surfaces thoroughly at first, but often neglect regular maintenance over time. However, to keep your furniture looking new and extend its lifespan, proper cleaning and care are essential. Neglecting this can lead to serious damage down the line. Fortunately, with a few simple tips, maintaining log furniture can be both easy and effective.
First, place your log furniture away from direct sunlight and humidity sources. Avoid positioning it near dehumidifiers or areas with excessive moisture. This helps prevent warping or cracking due to temperature fluctuations.
Second, avoid leaving liquids on the surface for long periods. If the wood isn’t treated, water, alcohol, or other liquids can leave unsightly white marks. Always wipe spills immediately and keep the surface dry to maintain its appearance.
Third, when it comes to cleaning and maintenance, always ask the seller whether the furniture requires oiling or waxing. If it’s waxed, use high-quality solid wax to fill small imperfections. Spray wax is also an option, but never mix different types, as this can dull the finish and make it look uneven.
When you first bring home new log furniture, take time to prepare your space carefully. Make sure your home is free from pests like termites, especially if moving into a second-hand house. Once placed, gently wipe the furniture with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Since new furniture usually comes with protective coatings like paint, there's no need to oil or wax it right away.
After some time, it's recommended to perform maintenance every two months. Products like Bi Lizhu are excellent for wood care. Apply them by wiping the surface with a dry cloth, then spraying the product evenly and wiping again for a smooth finish.
Moisture control is crucial for preserving wooden furniture. Some finishes, like glossy varnishes or glass paints, may crack over time if not properly maintained. Additionally, improper drying of the wood during production can lead to future problems. If the wood is too moist, it may warp; if too dry, it might crack. Proper moisture balance is key to long-term durability.
Remember, log furniture naturally regulates humidity, so frequent dehumidification isn't necessary. One session per month is usually sufficient. However, if you live in a humid area, increase the frequency to prevent mold and mildew. A useful tip is: “On days with a southern wind, it's time to dehumidify.†In summer, when humidity is high and rain is common, more frequent dehumidification is advised to protect your furniture.
