KOYO Needle Roller Bearing Installation in Cylindrical Inner Space

Source: China Bearing Network | Date: July 2, 2013

When installing a KOYO needle roller bearing, it's essential to consider the type of fit between the inner and outer rings and the shaft or housing. If the inner ring is tightly fitted to the shaft and the outer ring is loosely mounted in the housing, the bearing should first be pressed onto the shaft. Then, the shaft with the bearing can be inserted into the housing bore. For smaller bearings, you can gently tap the end face of the inner ring using a soft metal hammer to help seat the bearing properly. However, make sure the tapping force is evenly distributed across the inner ring to avoid damaging the bearing. If the outer ring is tightly fitted to the housing and the inner ring is loosely fitted to the shaft, it’s recommended to install the bearing on the shaft first. When both the inner and outer rings are securely attached, use a special installation sleeve to press the bearing onto the shaft or housing. This method ensures a smooth and accurate fit without causing any damage to the rolling elements or raceways. It’s important to maintain concentricity during installation. Once the inner ring is mounted on the shaft, carefully insert it into the housing with the outer ring already in place. Any misalignment could lead to scratches on the raceway or damage to the rolling elements, which may affect the bearing’s performance and lifespan. For larger bearings, where a significant amount of force is required, or when there is a high interference fit due to heavy-duty operation, cold mounting may not be practical. In such cases, it’s necessary to heat the inner ring or the housing before installation. The heating temperature must be strictly controlled—typically between 80°C and 100°C, and never exceeding 120°C. Bearings with dust covers or sealing rings should not be heated, as this can cause lubricant loss and reduce their effectiveness. Heating methods can include electric induction, oil bath heating, or other suitable techniques. Always ensure proper safety measures are followed when handling heated components.
