Israel develops Ecoppia E4 robot to clean solar panels

The use of solar energy in the desert environment is certainly a very good choice, but in such an environment, solar photovoltaic arrays will be covered by dust and the performance will be greatly reduced. It is time consuming and laborious to clean solar panels, and Israel’s newly developed solar installation is said to be the world’s first product with full automatic cleaning capabilities.
Ketura Sun should be Israel’s first commercial land for solar energy, with an area of ​​about 8 hectares, capable of generating 9 million kWh of electricity each year. This area is located in the Negev Desert. The entire plant is owned by Siemens AG and Arava Power, the latter leading Israeli solar technology development companies.
Clearing Ketura Sun's solar panels costs a lot of money, and the manual cleaning cycle is only nine times a year. Most of these solar devices operate under dust inefficiencies. It takes 5 days for each cleaning work, and it is also a big risk that the cleaning process may damage the equipment.
And now Ketura Sun's solar panels are cleaned by about 100 robots every night. The robot's cleaning process does not require water, and it is powered by its own energy. The robot, called Ecoppia E4, is mounted on a frame that moves alongside the solar panel, and the robot itself can move up and down on the solar panel. Their use of a blower and a rotating brush made of microfibers is said to clean up 99% of dust.
The entire cleaning process does not require water, which is different from the Heliotex solar cleaning system, avoiding the use of water resources that were scarce in such environments. At the same time, these robots themselves also have solar panels and energy supply systems, which are the energy sources for their own operation. So these robots are almost completely autonomous without relying on other devices. Ecoppia said that the accumulation of dust on solar panels will reduce solar energy output by as much as 35%. The E4 robot will clear 99% of the dust every night and it will help the solar panels to maintain their best performance.
