Europe Cooperatively Develops High-Efficiency, Low-Cost Organic Solar Cells

The Microelectronics Research Center (IMEC) and 16 partners have jointly launched the EU's Seventh Framework Program X10D project to develop a new series of organic solar cells. This battery has higher conversion efficiency, longer service life, and lower production costs. IMEC said that the primary goal of the project is to apply organic photovoltaic technology to the thin film photovoltaic market.

organic solar battery

Organic solar cells have always been considered low cost and high power generation, which are two prerequisites for new technologies in the photovoltaic industry. The current organic photovoltaic technology is still unstable, especially when the organic photovoltaic cell is exposed to the environment, its energy conversion efficiency is not enough to replace the traditional crystalline silicon photovoltaic technology. By merging new designs, materials, and manufacturing methods, the X10D project will increase the conversion efficiency of 1cm2 solar cells to 12%, and increase the conversion efficiency of 100cm2 solar modules to 9%. In addition, the project ensures that the minimum lifetime of organic solar modules on glass substrates is 20 years, the minimum lifetime of organic solar modules on metal foil substrates is 10 years, and the production cost can be reduced to less than 0.70 euro/Wp.

Many researchers from European universities, research institutes and companies participated in this project. The European Commission provided some funding for the project.
