Strengthen migrant workers safety education

It is well known that corporate overhauls are prone to accidents, and among the major incidents, migrant workers often end up as the biggest victims. Recently, the author observed a chemical company undergoing maintenance and noticed frequent instances of "three violations" among migrant workers. For example, some did not wear helmets properly, failed to use safety belts during high-altitude work, and even used wrenches in unsafe ways. Additionally, fire permits were often ignored. The author strongly believes that improving safety education for migrant workers is essential and cannot be overlooked.

Due to the short time frame and heavy workload of equipment overhauls, many companies hire migrant workers to assist with maintenance tasks. However, due to their limited experience and lack of formal training, these workers often have weak safety awareness and no professional emergency skills. Most companies neglect to provide adequate safety training, leaving the education process superficial and ineffective.

To continuously improve the safety awareness of migrant workers and ensure the smooth and safe execution of overhaul activities, companies should focus on three key areas:

First, internal employees must lead by example. Formal employees usually receive proper safety training and have a strong sense of responsibility and knowledge about safety protocols. They can serve as role models, influencing migrant workers through their behavior and promoting a culture of safe practices.

Second, safety education for migrant workers should be tailored and practical. Instead of generic training sessions, companies should design specific programs based on the nature of each maintenance project. This ensures that migrant workers truly learn how to protect themselves and handle emergencies. For instance, one chemical company went beyond basic training by asking workers about safety colors, how electric arcs can harm the eyes, and the importance of protective gear in toxic environments.

Finally, increased safety supervision is crucial. Companies should involve safety personnel from different departments to conduct joint inspections, enforce strict rules, and eliminate any blind spots. Special attention should be given to less-visited areas where migrant workers may be more likely to ignore safety procedures—these are the “dead zones” that require extra vigilance. Clear assessment measures and stronger penalties should also be implemented to ensure accountability and create a safer, healthier working environment for everyone.

Safety is not everything in a company, but without it, there is no business. By continuously enhancing safety education for migrant workers and ensuring they follow all regulations, companies can prevent accidents and foster a culture of mutual protection. Ultimately, this helps build a strong safety barrier that supports long-term success and stability.
