How to Remove Motor Bearings

Motor bearings should be cleaned and lubricated after every 2000 hours of operation. There are two main methods for removing motor bearings, depending on the condition of the bearing and the type of grease or rust present.

The first method involves using hot oil to remove hardened dry oil or anti-rust compounds. If the bearing has become stiff due to long-term use, it should be immersed in oil heated to between 100°C and 200°C. Use pliers to grip the bearing and brush away the softened grease. As the oil heats up, the dry oil or anti-rust compound will melt and can be easily washed out from the bearing’s gaps. Sometimes, shaking the bearing in the oil helps the oil flow out more effectively.

For older motors or imported motors with spherical roller bearings, the inner ring, cage, and balls should be carefully removed from the outer ring before soaking in hot oil. In the case of short cylindrical roller bearings, the roller, cage, inner ring, and outer ring should all be separated during removal.

When using hot oil, make sure the temperature does not exceed 200°C. If heating directly over an open flame, be cautious to avoid burning the oil. It is recommended to hang the bearing in the oil pan to prevent overheating, which could reduce its hardness and affect performance.

The second method is a more general approach. Place the bearing in a container of hot oil for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, hold the inner ring with one hand while rotating the outer ring with the other. This will help the dry oil or anti-rust compound fall off. Afterward, rinse the bearing in clean kerosene using a soft brush to remove any remaining residue. A final cleaning with gasoline ensures that all grease and dirt are removed. Once cleaned, place the bearing on a clean piece of paper to dry.

When removing bearings mounted on a shaft, you can use an oil gun or spray to loosen the old grease. For stubborn deposits, start by washing with kerosene, then follow up with gasoline if necessary. Avoid using sharp tools to scrape the bearing surface, as this can damage the rolling elements and raceway. Always dry the cleaned bearing with a clean cloth to prevent rusting.
