China is the world's largest consumer of vegetable oils and proteins. Currently, the main methods for the production of vegetable oils are mechanical pressing and solvent extraction. "Mechanical pressing method is the use of mechanical force to squeeze oil out of the oil. There is a problem of low oil yield, poor quality of oils, and low value-added products. Solvent extraction is the application of chemical solvents to soak oil extraction. Oils, greases and solvents are easy to remain, and the safety is poor. At the same time, there are problems such as high energy consumption and large environmental pollution,” said Jiang Lianzhou.

The Jiang Lianzhou team began its research in 2006 and lasted for 11 years. It has formed a unique biological method for the simultaneous production and application of key technologies for vegetable oils and proteins. It has established an internationally advanced technology system for vegetable oil bioprocessing.

“We have invented a method for the simultaneous extraction of vegetable oils and proteins by biological dissociation. This method eliminates chemical solvents and uses oil, protein and alkaline proteases, cellulase, pectinase, etc. from oil at lower temperatures. In the process of biological separation, the nutrients of oils and proteins are largely preserved, and no pollution is caused to the environment. It is green, safe and environmentally friendly,” said Jiang Lianzhou.

The new technology developed by the project has been applied in 21 domestic enterprises. Of these, 9 companies had newly increased sales of 732.221 million yuan in the past three years, and added profits of 84,680,500 yuan. What is more noteworthy is that the project has reduced the amount of acid and alkali, reduced the amount of sewage discharged, avoided the use of chemical solvents and excessive processing of oil, and created social and environmental benefits of nearly 1 billion yuan a year.

On the 10th, the appraisal committee chaired by Xie Jianping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, agreed that the overall technology of the project has reached the international advanced level, in which oil bio-dissociation mechanism and protein flexible processing theory research, simultaneous extraction of functional proteins and saponins and other by-products are high.
