Scientists create reusable sponges that can effectively absorb oil spills
According to foreign media New Atlas reports, although we have seen many materials designed to remove oil spills from water, many of them are disposable and will eventually be landfilled. Now, however, scientists have created an oil-absorbing sponge that can be used repeatedly. This sponge was developed by a team led by Northwestern University in Illinois. The actual sponge itself is very similar to other sponges. The secret is to apply a thin layer of coating on it, called OHM (oleophilic hydrophobic magnetic) nanocomposite slurry, which is composed of magnetic nanostructures.
This matrix is ​​lipophilic and hydrophobic, which means (respectively) that it can attract oil and repel water. Therefore, the sponge can absorb the amount of oil more than 30 times its weight without adding water. Subsequently, these oils can be squeezed out for safe disposal or repeated use, allowing the sponge to absorb more oil at any time. In addition, the magnetic properties of the coating allow the sponge to move on the water surface with an external magnetic field. This means that large shipboard electromagnets can be used to deploy, recover and "guide" sponges at oil spill sites.
More importantly, when an external radio signal is applied to the sponge, it will be absorbed by the magnetic nanostructure, heating it to around 60 ºC (140 ºF). This, in turn, will help the sponge release its amount of oil, which is not enough when squeezing alone.
Scientists said that in the future, the technology is expected to selectively absorb and release other water pollutants, such as agricultural runoff or dissolved nutrients in sewage. "Our sponges can work effectively under different extreme aquatic conditions, and these aquatic environments have different pH and salinity levels," said lead scientist Professor Vinayak Dravid of Northwestern University. "We believe that we can solve gigaton-level problems with nano-scale solutions."
A paper about the study was recently published in the journal "Industrial Engineering and Chemical Research".
